The State of New Mexico, known as the Land of Enchantment, is rich in culture, arts, adventure, relaxation and history. There are 19 Indian pueblos which have been inhabited for the past 1,000 years, and each has its own rich culture and history to explore. The cool dry air, plentiful sunshine and temperate weather of the mountain towns of Santa Fe and Taos, have created a haven for health-seekers, and today they are both world-renown as international artist communities. There are three major airports with easy access (via car rental or bus service) to the ski resorts in New Mexico. Distances from Taos are: Santa Fe 72 mi/116 km (1 ¼ hr.), Albuquerque 135 mi/217 km (2 ¼ hrs.), and Colorado Springs (230 mi/370 km (3 ¾ hr.). Taos Airport is available for private jets, and there are direct flights to Albuquerque from Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and Houston.

The Town of Taos dates back to 1540 when the Spanish expeditions first arrived from Mexico into the valley. Taos is today a colorful community of three diverse cultures (Spanish, Indian and Anglo) with a strong cultural and arts background. The Town Plaza is the central focal point of cultural events and festivals with many art galleries, museums and restaurants; most everything is within walking distance. Taos Pueblo is a World Heritage Site and open to the public with guided tours and casinos. It has been inhabited for over 1,000 years and today has a population of 150 people in the village, with 1,900 Indians still living on the Pueblo lands. The Taos Ski Valley is located 40 min. north of the town, and there is public transportation back and forth or easy access with a car rental. The Ski Valley Village has a variety of lodging ranging from ski-in/ski-out, inns with spa amenities, Bavarian lodges, condominiums, chalets and bed and breakfasts. www.skitaos.org |
